It might be hard to believe when watching the hyper-professional, clinical, some might say sterile world of 21st century Formula 1, but there was a time when the world’s racing series worked out of trucks and cement block garages. That said, it was also an era that had atmosphere. At many circuits enthusiast were able to get paddock access to see the teams up close.

The Way it Was captures Ferrari mechanic, Ermanno Cuoghi, assisted by the Magneti Marelli technician rebuild the gearbox of the Ferrari 312B3. The gearbox is placed on a piece of cardboard that rest on the ground outside the concrete garage in the Nurburgring paddock.
